The tide waits for no man

The tide waits for no man….but it took the Venerable Bede to work out why. Long before Newton and his gravitational theories, Bede worked out that it was the pull of the moon that drove the tides. Not bad for a monk in a monastery in Jarrow.

And what, you might ask, has this to do with shoes? Well, the answer is very simple. Our new boat shoes have just arrived from the workshop and this, rather like hearing the first cuckoo of spring or seeing the first swallow of summer, is a harbinger of warmer times and sailing.  And so, with boat shoes afoot, I have been pouring over tide tables to plan the first launch of the season and inevitably thinking of dear old Bede.

I must down to the sea again…
