Smell is a very strong and primitive sense that has the power to conjure vivid memories and emotions out of nowhere; think no further than the smell of seaweed on a beach or a bar-b-que. I am reminded of this every time I go into Billy Ruffian HQ and am greeted by the wonderful smell of leather or, to be more specific, the various plant extracts that were used in tanning it. And what a heady mix it is; essence of oak bark from our sole leather mingling with the sweet scent of the mimosa and exotic spiciness of the sumac leaf that emanates from our wallet leathers. What is amazing is that these smells have not changed with time and provide a tangible link to the ancient artisans who first started preserving and crafting animal skins thousands of years ago. It’s this incredible continuity that is part of the magic of leather.
